In Putonghua with Chi & Eng Sub

Li Ruicheng is the fourth generation owner of his family's two century-old Chinese medicinal plaster business. He has spent the past year appraising the potential heirs to the family business, but just as he is about to arrive at his decision, his two children express their desire to start their own businesses.

Director's Profile
Director, curator and co-founder of the Inner Mongolia Youth Film Week, Gu Xue received her Master's degree from the Communication University of China. Her recent work The Choice (2020) was selected at the Cinéma du Réel Film Festival, France.

Director's Note
This film started from the Chinese Fortune documentary project plan, which is about spending one year's time to continuously observe changes in a Chinese family. During the year, we were with this family almost every day, and finally felt like part of them. Within this film, you can see the way how our camera gets along with Li's family every day, in a way which is wordless, subtle and sensitive. The film crew is like a detective finding clues to figure out the hidden secrets and true words behind everyone's back.
