In Putonghua with Chi & Eng Sub

Ten years ago, the director's father went through a cerebral hemorrhage, which brought his life to a halt. The making of this film allowed the director to convince his father to pick up the brush again, and soon a deeper than ever emotional bond developed between the two amid rekindled conversations and retrospection.

Director's Profile
A graduate in Film Production from the Central Academy of Drama,China, Zhao Maomao is a director, screenwriter, cinematographer and film editor. She recently received a Master's degree in filmmaking at the Maryland Institute College of Art, USA.

Director's Note
Blank Canvas is a personal documentary. Art has always been central to my family, and when my father was diagnosed with a form of paralysis that ended his painting career, his loss changed us as well. So I was interested in considering how using my own art could reciprocally change my father's outlook, to push him to paint again. Realism was central to this goal: natural lighting, long takes, and generally integrating the camera into our family's everyday life.
