A Poetic Filmmaker- Abbas Kiarostami

Abbas Kiarostami (1940 –2016) was one of the leading figures in contemporary Iranian film. He was part of a generation of filmmakers in the Iranian New Wave and received more than 70 film awards in his career. His representative films includes Where Is the Friend's Home?, Close-Up, A Taste of Cherry and Shirin.

Peter Rist has been teaching film history and aesthetics at Concordia University, Montreal, since 1989 and served as Chair of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. Most recently he has had book chapters published on the relationship between landscape painting and the early films of Chen Kaige in Poetics of Chinese Cinema, and the creative collaboration of Hou Hsiao Hsien and Mark Lee Ping Bing in Transnational Cinematography Studies.
