Wong Yan Kwai is a complex man. The film follows and reveals him in his essence, in his element. In his interaction with the director, we discover unexpected elements of this character, and what it is like to "tango" with an artist who may be difficult and lives in a box of his choosing and above all, get a chance to reflect on why we make documentaries.
Angie Chen is an veteran film director and producer. She is now the Creative Director of Scorpio Films and teaches part-time in the Film Academy's MFA Program at Hong Kong Baptist University.
Yank Wong is a Hong Kong artist, musician, writer and screenwriter. He studied painting in France and his style leans towards the abstract. He is also known for his unconventional and uncompromising character. He used clear lines and bright colours in many of his works, such as Fond 2 and Full Moon. Many have called his works abstract art, but he himself does not think so.
A man of many talents, he works across various artistic fields apart from painting, including playing blues, writing, screenwriting and production design. He is the winner of 2 Hong Kong Film Awards, one for his production design work in The Lunatics and the other for his screenplay for Cageman. He is also an avid essayist and published the essay collections Fang Feng and Ngan bak bak (眼白白), the former is a winner at the 5th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature.
Wong does not consider himself as a “painter”, but rather “a person who paints” and who simply enjoys expressing himself through his paintings. He has once said in an interview that the creative force comes from within himself, and the reaction of the viewer plays no part in his creative process.
Screenings at the Hong Kong Arts Centre will be available at URBTIX from 7 September.
